If Handshake AI does not have a project that fits your background—or you simply do not want to rely on one platform—several other companies offer similar remote AI-training work.
I narrowed the options down to five platforms that recruit subject-matter experts, experienced professionals, and other contributors to evaluate AI responses, create training examples, annotate data, or apply specialized knowledge to artificial-intelligence projects.
I scored each alternative using the same six categories I use in my individual reviews: barrier to entry, work consistency, pay transparency, work difficulty, time commitment, and reputation.
The short version is that RemoExperts is probably the closest structural alternative to Handshake AI, while Mercor earned the highest overall score. Those are not the same conclusions. The platform that looks best for an experienced professional may not be the closest match for a student, graduate, or first-time AI trainer.
None of these platforms guarantees acceptance, regular projects, weekly hours, or a particular amount of income. I would treat them as possible sources of supplemental project work—not dependable replacements for a full-time job.

A higher work-difficulty score means the work should be easier for a properly qualified contributor. These are weighted scores: reputation receives 50% of the final result, while each of the other five categories receives 10%.
How I Selected These Handshake AI Alternatives
I did not include every website that advertises remote AI work. To make this list, a platform needed to offer project-based work that overlaps meaningfully with Handshake AI's expert-oriented model.
That work can include:
- Reviewing or ranking AI-generated responses
- Writing prompts and model-training examples
- Fact-checking or improving model outputs
- Labeling and annotating data
- Creating subject-specific questions, rubrics, or reference answers

5. RemoExperts (REX): Closest Credentials-First Alternative
RemoExperts, also called REX or rex.zone, connects contributors with remote projects involving AI evaluation, data annotation, content labeling, creative work, coding, safety review, and other specialist tasks.
This may be the closest Handshake AI alternative in terms of structure. Many of the opportunities I reviewed were built around a defined professional field, and specialist projects commonly expected a bachelor's degree, relevant experience, or both.
REX also uses a more selective onboarding process than a basic microtask website. Its official FAQ says applicants register, complete an entry exam, verify their identity, and may need to pass additional project-specific assessments. The entry exam normally takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes and cannot currently be retaken.
The biggest concern is consistency. REX explains that projects can range from short pilots to programs lasting several months, but passing its screening does not mean an assignment will immediately be available. A project may be full, paused, restricted by region, or dependent on a skill the applicant does not have.
Pay information also varies. Some specialist listings disclose useful ranges, while other opportunities provide less detail. The specific project, region, complexity, and approval requirements matter far more than a platform-wide earning claim.

4. Mindrift: Flexible Projects for Experts and Generalists
Mindrift is a project-based platform where contributors help create prompts, evaluate AI responses, refine content, annotate data, and complete tasks tied to their expertise.
The specialist side of Mindrift is a meaningful Handshake alternative. Applicants find an opportunity related to their background, submit a CV, complete assessments and identity verification, and enter a project or talent pool when there is a match.
Many specialist roles expect a substantial academic or professional background. That is why Mindrift originally received a low barrier-to-entry score in my review. The company now also advertises a separate all-access route for simpler tasks that require no specific degree, prior experience, or domain expertise. That newer route makes Mindrift more accessible overall, although those general tasks are not the part of the platform that most closely resembles Handshake.
Work availability remains the central limitation. Mindrift's FAQ explains that project demand depends on its clients. A contributor may see an influx of assignments in one specialty and then experience downtime after that project ends.
Mindrift currently says the exact reward is visible before a task begins and accepted work is paid twice per month through Payoneer or Tipalti, which can support PayPal withdrawals. That is more useful than relying only on the “up to” figures displayed on many opportunity pages.

3. AfterQuery Experts: Strongest Pay Transparency
AfterQuery Experts recruits professionals to evaluate data, review AI outputs, write prompts, explain decisions, and apply subject knowledge to model-training projects.
The marketplace covers many fields, including medicine, finance, law, software engineering, data analysis, writing, business, languages, arts, and research. This expert-network structure makes it a closer Handshake substitute than a generic website built around small repetitive tasks.
AfterQuery had one of the larger visible catalogs when I performed the full review. That helped its work-consistency score, but a long list of projects still does not guarantee that several of them will match your location, qualifications, or availability.
Pay transparency is the strongest part of the platform. Most listings I checked showed either a fixed rate or a full minimum-to-maximum range. That is more informative than advertising only a best-case maximum with no lower bound.
The tradeoff is that many projects are genuinely demanding. Applicants may need several years of professional experience, an advanced degree, a license, or highly specialized knowledge. Some listings can also expect 10, 20, or even more hours per week, so “flexible” does not always mean low commitment.

Meridial is the expert-contractor network powered by Invisible Technologies. It matches contributors with remote AI-training projects in areas such as law, STEM, finance, coding, linguistics, safety, and general evaluation.
The work can involve rating model outputs, labeling data, writing domain tests, finding errors, and applying specialist judgment. Compared with the most credential-heavy platforms on this list, Meridial has sometimes displayed a broader mix of generalist and specialist opportunities.
That does not make the work automatically available. Meridial explains that it reviews a contributor's profile against current project needs. If no suitable assignment exists, the profile remains active for possible future invitations. You can accept or decline an invitation when one arrives.
I gave Meridial and AfterQuery the same 59% weighted score. I placed Meridial second in this particular comparison because the average project work appeared somewhat more approachable. I would reverse the order if pay transparency mattered more to me, because AfterQuery was stronger in that category.
Pay varies by assignment. Some opportunities provide a clear hourly figure, while others display a wide range that does not tell an applicant where they are likely to fall. Applicants should verify the final rate, schedule, approval rules, and project duration before accepting a statement of work.

Mercor earned the highest score primarily because of its stronger reputation and better compensation transparency. Current roles commonly display a rate or range, and Mercor says project terms are defined before the work begins. Its expert page also says contributors are paid weekly.
The platform currently displays a company-reported average contracted rate of $111 per hour. I would not interpret that as a promise of what a new applicant will earn. Compensation depends on the field, project complexity, demand, qualifications, and whether the applicant receives an offer at all.
Mercor is also one of the least beginner-friendly choices here. Its own FAQ says minimum qualifications typically require undergraduate-level expertise, while many projects expect years of professional experience or an advanced degree. Applicants generally create a profile, complete an AI evaluation or interview, and wait to be matched with relevant opportunities.

If I wanted the platform that most closely resembles Handshake's credentials-first project model, I would start with RemoExperts. If I already had substantial professional experience and wanted the strongest overall score, I would check Mercor first.
AfterQuery may be the better choice when clear project rates matter most. Meridial becomes more attractive when I want a broader range of evaluation work, while Mindrift now provides both specialist applications and a lower-barrier all-access task route.
I would not replace dependence on Handshake with dependence on one other platform. Applying to two or three companies that genuinely fit my background would create more possible sources of work, although it still would not make the income predictable.
Are These Platforms Legitimate?
All five appear to be real operating platforms, but legitimacy is only the first question.
A legitimate platform can still have:
- Difficult assessments
- Slow onboarding
- Few projects in a particular country or field
- Long periods without assignments
- Rates that vary considerably between projects
- Work that ends earlier than expected
Before applying, make sure you are using the company's official domain. None of these opportunities should require you to pay an application fee. Review the current contractor terms, privacy policy, payment system, workload, and confidentiality rules before accepting a project.
