Of all the weird ways to make extra money, selling your poop might be one of the weirdest.
But hey, it only takes about 30 minutes/day, contributes to science that can improve lives, and you're already doing it anyway for free!
Why not give it a shot?
Why would anyone want your poop?
Human Microbes, a stool donor network currently serving the USA and Canada, is trying to increase the quality and availability of stool donors.
High quality stool donors are needed to help aid research of gut microbiome and Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT)(the easiest way to transfer the gut microbes from one person or animal to another).
FMT allows researchers to test what impact the microbiome has on many conditions, diseases, illnesses, treatments, and more.
You can read more about the research in this area here.
How it works
All supplies the donor needs will be provided and al costs of screening will be covered.
Once approved as a donor, you'll just have to ship your samples through a process that only takes around 30 minutes per day.
Additional steps may need to be taken, depending on how much you're trying to get paid per sample.
Payout Breakdown
As far as how you get paid, the worldwide standard is $40 per stool sample, which is $15,000 a year if you’re donating one sample each day.
If you are willing to mix your stool with an anti-freeze and then split it up into smaller pieces/doses they’ll pay $75 per sample. This amounts to $27,000 per year if you do this daily.
On top of all that, if you’re willing to encapsulate the stool they'll not only provide simple instructions and tools to do so, but also pay $5 per capsule.
Donor Qualifications
Human Microbes is looking for people in exceptional physical and mental health, with unperturbed, disease-resistant gut microbiomes.
since gut dysbiosis increases with age and is associated with all the diseases of old age, they’re also looking for donors under 30 years old.
Parents of donors ages 14 and under would have to be screened as well since the gut microbiome is largely heritable, and it can be difficult to gauge the health and development of a person until they reach their late teens.
Conclusion + $1000 Bonus
Yes, you can get paid for just about anything, even shipping your poop to a lab.
But, all joking aside, it's for science that can help make the world a better and healthier place for us all.
So, if you think you can qualify, you might consider doing it for the world as well as the money.
Also, make sure to use the code “makingsenseofcents” in the “how did you hear about us” section for a $1,000 bonus paid out over your first 30 donations.
